In the 1920s,
Swedish ophthalmologist Henrik Sjogren first began to investigate
and publicize patients with dry eyes and mouth. His research led to
the recognition of Sjogren’s Syndrome. Later Sjogren and his
ophthalmologist wife gathered a group of patients with dry eyes and
mouth and in most cases chronic arthritis. He presented a thesis
with his findings on Sjogren’s Syndrome in 1933. Today scientists
continue to study the disease, however, treatment and knowledge
regarding Sjogren’s Syndrome are still minimal.
